Winter Skills Weekend #1

Last weekend (18/9th Feb) I went up to Patterdale for a winter skills course, unfortunately Saturday’s weather forecast was not the best, gale force winds with gusts reaching 60-70 mph and a wind chill of -15°C. With this in mind the decision was taken to keep at a low level and use the time for practising micro navigation and group management. We basically did a circuit of Place Fell with the highest point on the walk being on Boredale Hause, this is where we spent some time doing the micro nav finding features on the map before heading down towards Boredale valley, passing the farm and continuing along the road to Beckside, stopping here for lunch where I tucked into my LWWF Meatballs which as always was very enjoyable.  We then started heading back to Patterdale via the path with runs along the banks of Ullswater. Even at this low level the wind made Ullswater quite choppy, the steamer looked like it was struggling going against the wind even so some brave soles stood out on its decks. We eventually got back to the YHA and after a quick shower and change headed for the pub knowing that Sundays forecast was perfect and we would finally be getting the ice axe and crampons out the bag.
